<br />
For the first year of our renovation we spent a lot of time and money gutting the property. We hired around 5 skips and loaded these with waste products from the house.<br />
<br />
However we weren't able to load old plasterboard into the skip as this needed disposing off separately so we stored all of the waste plasterboard in the garage and borrowed a van to take this all to the local tip ourselves. Now that we are closer to getting the house finished we no longer have the need to have a skip on the drive however as we are still working on the house there is still waste products that need disposing off. Again we have saved all these up until we have a van load and taken them to the local tip at Newquay.<br />
<br />
On arrival we see new fenced off areas which incur additional charges for disposing of waste. This includes Soil, Rubble, Plasterboard, asbestos and Tyres. When we moved into our house the access was<a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/clearing-down-side-of-garage.html"> completely blocked </a>and had been used as a dumping ground and we removed 7 tyres alone not to mention the rest!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AjKRpvbXm-M/VF5KrU__QzI/AAAAAAAAHgc/xf0X1dgSPsM/w1026-h577-no/20141108_134644.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="charges to use the local tip" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AjKRpvbXm-M/VF5KrU__QzI/AAAAAAAAHgc/xf0X1dgSPsM/w1026-h577-no/20141108_134644.jpg" height="179" title="charges to use the local tip" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w30cieV1DT4/VF5KswLVX4I/AAAAAAAAHgo/kyTo-7LeRUg/w830-h471-no/2014-11-08%2B13.47.21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Charges to dispose waste at the local tip in Newquay" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w30cieV1DT4/VF5KswLVX4I/AAAAAAAAHgo/kyTo-7LeRUg/w830-h471-no/2014-11-08%2B13.47.21.jpg" height="181" title="Charges to dispose waste at the local tip in Newquay" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We've removed all the internal walls downstairs, the bathroom floor and ceiling all the upstairs bedroom walls and a lot of this was plasterboard. Had we taken this to the tip with the new charges this would have cost us a small fortune. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now I am not happy about the charges as for first time buyers and renovators this increases the costs by quite a bit especially when it costs £4.40 per sheet to dispose of. When we ordered in the new plaster board sheets to renovate the whole house we ordered nearly 100 sheets and have added more since the beginning. Which means we have propably removed around the same amount and taking those to the tip now would cost us £100's of pounds to dispose of. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Whilst recently cycling around the local countryside we have noticed a lot more fly tipping going on especially car tyres and it's no wonder when small businesses are struggling to make money and now incur additionally charges to dispose of rubbish, I understand that items like asbestos require specialist removal and disposal however for the general DIY person or someone doing gardening and removing soil it suddenly becomes expensive to remove waste. We are lucky we are nearly finished on the renovation of our home and most of the work left to complete is decorating but had these charges come into play a few years ago the build cost would have gone up by a few hundred pounds. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I really hope that these charges do not increase fly tipping in the Cornish countryside, it already costs to gain a permit to access the tip for businesses and those in a van so this additional cost on top just makes things harder for small businesses and I just hope people can afford it and don't fly tip our beautiful region.</div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03571190301618600891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2651742906893621380.post-54884465204937479452014-11-09T09:44:00.001+00:002014-11-09T09:44:22.677+00:00landing plastered transforming the upstairs<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We bought our first ever house in September 2012 and started by completely gutting the property, when Christmas arrived we went to the parents for Christmas and enjoyed the luxuries of their home whilst ours purely resembled a building site. As we entered into 2013 we decided that we wanted Christmas at our house this year. We worked hard through 2013 to get as much done as possible and with a Kitchen and Bathroom and the downstairs 90% complete we held our first <a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/work-stops-to-celebrate-christmas.html">Christmas in our new home</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As we entered into 2014 the work slowed right down as our finances were in pretty bad shape after pushing the build in the first year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now each month we get a little more done and slowly the house creeps together. The past three months we have concentrated on <a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/our-bedroom-is-complete-check-out.html">getting our bedroom done</a> but with that now 100% completed we move onto the next stage and that's the landing upstairs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was over 12 months ago that we made all the <a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/moving-bathroom-door.html">changes to the landing upstairs</a> by moving the internal walls to create a wider landing and since then we have concentrated on the master bedroom so the walls have sat with raw plasterboard for the last year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/1467480_10152054885559666_1303624262_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Moving interior walls upstairs" border="0" height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/1467480_10152054885559666_1303624262_n.jpg" title="Moving interior walls upstairs" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With our master bedroom complete we had to make the decision where to work on next, we were both tempted to work on the next bedrooms but as these will be spare rooms and barely used we decided that the best use of our money this month was to get the landing plastered. As the wall is exposed at the bottom in the dining room it helps to complete downstairs, and as the new plasterboard also creeps into the bathroom it seemed the best use of our monthly budget as meant we could make a real difference in the whole house. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now we just need to wait for the plaster to fully dry so that we can start painting the walls, once painted we can add skirting boards and architrave to the doors and really complete the upstairs. We also want to create a feature out of the landing light and add a giant photograph to the wall. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Work will now slow down as our money goes on presents for the family rather than presents for the house but as we enter 2015 the end of the renovation is in sight and with two bedrooms to plaster, decorate and carpet, a landing and stairs to carpet and furniture required downstairs we need to stretch our budget and the work that required but hopefully by the summer we will be very close to having a finished home and can then move onto working on landscaping the garden, the driveway and the house exterior. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Building our first ever home has been done on the absolute shoe string of a budget, we have taken out loans and credit cards and worked overtime to fund the project. As we finally finish our master bedroom after two years living in our half home half building site we up-cycling our existing furniture to fit into the new décor of the master bedroom. I've been with my partner for over six years and since we moved in together we combined all our existing furniture. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These Ikea bedside tables were from my partners flat and are around 10 years old. They don't suit our bedroom now that we have gone for a clean white approach to the room but painting them and up-cycling them makes them fit in perfectly and will now happily be a part of our new bedroom. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We already have the paint and sandpaper in the garage so with no additional cost involved this was the best way to improve our bedroom without spending any money,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xzweOnBbIFE/VEJkfUiwdLI/AAAAAAAAGuA/Es-ESK07Zxk/w325-h577-no/20141018_135937.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Ikea Malm bedside table" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xzweOnBbIFE/VEJkfUiwdLI/AAAAAAAAGuA/Es-ESK07Zxk/w325-h577-no/20141018_135937.jpg" height="320" title="Ikea Malm bedside table" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We first sanded the old bedside tables down to give the surface a key for the paint to adhere to.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CXDgKE3XACI/VEJ2lYVZXuI/AAAAAAAAGuU/ObS2vk13XEY/w1026-h577-no/20141018_151726.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="painted malm ikea bedside table" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CXDgKE3XACI/VEJ2lYVZXuI/AAAAAAAAGuU/ObS2vk13XEY/w1026-h577-no/20141018_151726.jpg" height="179" title="painted malm ikea bedside table" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With the bedside table sanded down it was time to give the item a coat of paint.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kZDR7qt8Lrw/VEOY3NJjWHI/AAAAAAAAG04/-I_2nZgUbDM/w325-h577-no/20141019_115603.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Up-cycled Malm Ikea bedside table" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kZDR7qt8Lrw/VEOY3NJjWHI/AAAAAAAAG04/-I_2nZgUbDM/w325-h577-no/20141019_115603.jpg" height="320" title="Up-cycled Malm Ikea bedside table" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Both bedside tables are then painted, the draw fronts are painted and all that's left to do is let them dry and put them in the bedroom. For no additional cost we have turned our old bedside tables into shiny new clean white ones that fit the master bedroom perfectly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SX_8xptv_0Y/VEOY8_OjFZI/AAAAAAAAG08/0NmGt_cTavs/w325-h577-no/20141019_115607.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Up-cycled Malm Ikea bedside table" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SX_8xptv_0Y/VEOY8_OjFZI/AAAAAAAAG08/0NmGt_cTavs/w325-h577-no/20141019_115607.jpg" height="320" title="Up-cycled Malm Ikea bedside table" width="180" /></a></div>

Check out the beautiful photographs<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After weeks of work and weeks of blogging about the work, i'm really pleased that our bedroom is now complete. There are a few minor items to snag but we are now complete and have spent our first night sleeping in the new room. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I guess now we might have a weekend off the renovations before starting the next room!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Would love to know your thoughts on the new bedroom.</div>

We couldn't decide on wall colours to match the wardrobe doors and from then in it was impossible to invisage how the room would come together.<br />
<br />
But little step by little step the room has taken shape and grown in character and has now become a beautiful room even if the room is nothing at all what either of us had in mind when we started the project.<br />
<br />
The next job on the list was to vinyl wrap the dressing table and buy a stool. This was proving just as impossible as choosing the paint colour for the walls. After sending off for several different vinyl samples we decided on a grey oak effect vinyl to match the recently purchased grey curtains and cushions with a grey material covered dressing table stool from Atlantic Shopping's online store.<br />
<br />
The dressing table looks beautiful and again nothing at all what I had in mind for the bedroom but on completion it looks perfect. Maybe it's best to go into house renovations with absolutely no idea what you want or what theme will suit the room as when it all comes together you get a nice surprise.<br />

This week we saw the weather turn a bit colder, the winds pick up and the rain start pouring. Our house has been one massive project for the last two years and although we took the house on as a project as quick as we are getting some parts finished other parts are needing new attention. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On Friday night we saw quite a lot of rain in Cornwall and when I got home from work was annoyed to see that the back door had water leaking through it and into the kitchen and the garage roof was leaking like a sieve.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/1476569_10152788795464666_121490989356149524_n.jpg?oh=46070a49faba57cb7abb48802c64f5c4&oe=54EA3DDF" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="leaking back door" border="0" height="180" src="https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/1476569_10152788795464666_121490989356149524_n.jpg?oh=46070a49faba57cb7abb48802c64f5c4&oe=54EA3DDF" title="leaking back door" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With the water swept and and distributed to dry it quicker and some buckets in place we are temporarily in control of the situation until the next down pour. We now need to add fixing roofs and doors to the long list of DIY that the house needs.</div>

Some amazing before and after pictures.I'm too excited even as I type that our bedroom is very, very nearly finished! I know I've been saying that for weeks but we really are very close now, so close in fact that we have actually made up the bed ready to move in!<br />
<br />
We have three drawer handles to fit on to the dressing table, as well as the main door furniture to fit on the bedroom door. We need to buy a dressing table stool which is proving incredible tricky to find one to fit in with the rest of our bedroom and lastly we need to choose some vinyl to cover the dressing table and then we are finished! 100% finished and ready to move in, although I think we will move in this weekend regardless of whether we have chosen the vinyl and the dressing table stool as several hours have been spent both in stores and online looking for the perfect products and we can't find any that jump out and complete the room, so we would prefer to wait until we find the perfect products and move in anyway.<br />
<br />
Here's how the room is looking right now. I'd love to know your thoughts....<br />

<br />
Although the downstairs of the house looks finished, or at least finished enough to live in whilst we continue work upstairs their are many jobs that still need final finishes downstairs. The skirtings are only balanced in place waiting to build custom build cupboards in the alcoves to then fit the skirtings to. The plinths above the kitchen cupboards are again not fixed and require painting. Then there are edges of walls that have been chipped when moving materials and furniture up and down the stairs that need touching in.<br />
<br />
However in the bedroom we are finishing this 100% before moving in. Filling minor holes and flaws in walls and the ceiling, window frames sanded back and painted even getting all new soft furnishings including duvet covers, curtains and cushions. Downstairs we've made do with our old lamp shade temporarily until we find one to suit the room, our cushions from our old rented house, as well as the old TV stand that has been with us for over 6 years and being a black and glass unit does not fit in with our country cottage feel for the room. These things will all be replaced and remade eventually but are temporary whilst we work elsewhere on the house. But the bedroom is different the master bedroom that we have waited over two years to complete is going to be 100% finished to a high standard before we move in.<br />
<br />
This week we have worked hard on finishing touches, we've put a mirror up above the dressing table area.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The new bedroom door has been hung, that's now three out of the four rooms upstairs with new doors and just the box room left needing it's new matching bedroom door.</div>

There are a few jobs left to finish but we should be able to move in very soon. We need to find a vinyl to cover the top of the dressing table and also find a dressing table stool that matches the rest of the bedroom.<br />
We also need to fit three new drawer handles on the dressing table draws and fit the door handles to the door and the room is ready to dress and move in. Now to get shopping for those last few bits and finally move into our gorgeous master bedroom. It's already looking beautiful and It will definitely be worth the two year wait and a lot of hard work!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03571190301618600891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2651742906893621380.post-12197084154733241552014-10-12T17:00:00.000+01:002014-10-12T17:00:00.923+01:00Stripping wall paper in the landingAlthough our main focus of attention has been to complete the master bedroom lately but jobs in the bedroom aren't always a two person job and my partner is fine on his own working in the bedroom. Whilst he works in the bedroom adding finishing and final touches I make a start on the landing striping off all the old wallpaper ready to have the landing and stairs plastered.<br />
<br />
The wall the follows up alongside the stairs is particularly wonky from top to bottom and may need plaster boarding before it is plastered but due to the thickness of the available area we might not be able to use a timber frame to hold the plaster board and may need to use a dot and dab technique for the plaster board. Either way the wallpaper on this wall needs removing and that's my job for the day!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--ABNCfyYhYk/VC-U4FtPouI/AAAAAAAAGL0/ewZ94zdevos/w325-h577-no/20140915_133243.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--ABNCfyYhYk/VC-U4FtPouI/AAAAAAAAGL0/ewZ94zdevos/w325-h577-no/20140915_133243.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With a make shift plank of wood screwed over the stairs it gives my a rather scary plinth above the stairs to work on the higher parts of the wall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a6ypjjO7r5A/VC-U4HjFsLI/AAAAAAAAGL0/0YaRLG9wrgs/w325-h577-no/20140915_105944.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a6ypjjO7r5A/VC-U4HjFsLI/AAAAAAAAGL0/0YaRLG9wrgs/w325-h577-no/20140915_105944.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Several hours later the wall is striped of all remnants of wallpaper and lining paper and ready for the next stage in the house. We aren't sure where to spend our money next. Getting the hallway complete would not only transform the upstairs landing but it would be the last remaining bit downstairs that still looks like a building site. But there's a part of me that thinks we should finish the bedrooms first and then move out to the landing. I don't want to be damaging the freshly plastered landing by moving furniture and materials into the other bedrooms. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Until we are ready to make that decision it is back to working on the master bedroom to get that one finally finshed. </div>

We had the <a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/work-continues-renovating-bedroom.html">wall lights fitted</a> last week and then had the task of looking for a lamp shade for the master bedroom. You wouldn't think that buying a lamp shade was a hard task but when you have two people with absolutely no idea what we both want it is quite a challenge. After a few hours at lighting show rooms, The Range, Homebase and Dunelm Mill we both found ourselves drawn to the dame lamp shade. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9DWWJcMuw34/VC-U4KuAnJI/AAAAAAAAGL0/cQQ7HZnsa8c/w1026-h577-no/20140920_075736.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Funky lamp shade" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9DWWJcMuw34/VC-U4KuAnJI/AAAAAAAAGL0/cQQ7HZnsa8c/w1026-h577-no/20140920_075736.jpg" height="179" title="Funky lamp shade" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Again neither of us had in mind that we wanted a paper lamp shade that cost a small fortune due to it's Habitat price tag but we both stood in the store looking at this intricately folded piece of paper and both agreed that this was the one we wanted! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next job is to start assembling the bed in the room and we start to see what our new bedroom is going to look like once finished and I'm really excited to say it's looking fabulous and I can't wait for it to be finished and move into our lovely new master bedroom.</div>

The whole time we have owned this house we have moved from room to room. Temporarily in one room whilst we work on the other and vice versa. We've moved from room to room whilst the plumbing was being completed. We've moved from room to room when <a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/building-bedroom-for-christmas.html">the rooms were actually structured </a> and even slept in the room with plastic sheeting between us and the room next door when the walls were removed.<br />
<br />
We made the decision to remove the bedroom wall and make the second bedroom smaller to enable us to use the extra space in the master bedroom to build inbuilt wardrobes. At the time I did wonder if it would all be worth it, the dust, the mess, the noise and the massive lack of somewhere to really relax and sleep but now the room is coming together it was all definitely worth it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/484788_10151966769304666_918825890_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Removing the walls in the bedroom" border="0" height="239" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/484788_10151966769304666_918825890_n.jpg" title="Removing the walls in the bedroom" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last week we had the carpet fitted, and after two years my bare feet felt carpet under foot for the first time and it was definitely worth the wait. However soon after the carpet was laid it was quickly covered up with dust sheets to protect it whilst we complete a little more painting in the room,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QG5hdD6yIKY/VC-U4APettI/AAAAAAAAGL0/7YRqATE7Ua0/w325-h577-no/20140915_073743.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Painted ceiling in the bedroom" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QG5hdD6yIKY/VC-U4APettI/AAAAAAAAGL0/7YRqATE7Ua0/w325-h577-no/20140915_073743.jpg" height="320" title="Painted ceiling in the bedroom" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The ceiling that was once black and mouldy is finally now gorgeous crisp and white. The skirting boards that were also recently fitted are now also painted in an off white colour and the room is really starting to look finished and very professional and most of all very inviting and I can't wait to move in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Rather than cancel the carpet fitting and reschedule when we are ready, we decided to continue and get the carpet laid.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It's hard to believe the room looked like this just a few months ago, I keep saying there's lots to do to get the bedroom done, but looking back at how much we have already done it's really close to being finished.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10389236_10152627621369666_8175718116056254080_n.jpg?oh=652f547d952f2dd940f17636cfd6249e&oe=54B6CF87&__gda__=1420795537_3753660fa94aaebce4c024b922b35ae9" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="gutting and redecorating the bedroom" border="0" height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10389236_10152627621369666_8175718116056254080_n.jpg?oh=652f547d952f2dd940f17636cfd6249e&oe=54B6CF87&__gda__=1420795537_3753660fa94aaebce4c024b922b35ae9" title="gutting and redecorating the bedroom" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
Now sadly we need to cover the carpet back over with dust sheets to complete a few last bits of painting before we can move into the bedroom.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03571190301618600891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2651742906893621380.post-45721756172734939462014-10-04T08:14:00.000+01:002014-10-04T08:14:09.991+01:00Work continues renovating the bedroom<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Work might have slowed down lately on the bedroom and yet again it's due to money, it might only be little jobs that need doing to complete the room but each little job costs a lot of money. The steps might be slow but our bedroom is really taking shape. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The next job ticked of the list is the electrics and this needed an electrician to come in. Only a few hours help from the electrician and we now have wall lights with switches either side of the bed, wall sockets and wall lights</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bycIsukq2oE/VC-U4H003MI/AAAAAAAAGL0/be8OPWKzB_g/w1026-h577-no/20140911_072123.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Fitting wall lights in the bedroom" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bycIsukq2oE/VC-U4H003MI/AAAAAAAAGL0/be8OPWKzB_g/w1026-h577-no/20140911_072123.jpg" height="179" title="Fitting wall lights in the bedroom" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We now have a deadline to reach as we have the carpet fitters booked for next week and there's still lots of painting and finishing jobs to do before the carpet goes down!</div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03571190301618600891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2651742906893621380.post-79335683177152457682014-09-07T08:34:00.003+01:002014-09-07T08:34:44.720+01:00Bedroom redecorating, building a custom wardrobeEarlier in the week I posted a <a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/renovating-our-dream-bedroom-little.html">list </a>of what was left to do on the bedroom and had a few weeks to do these before our week off work to really crack on with the work. But with my partner super keen to get the bedroom completed he has booked the carpet fitter in for this week and not the week after!<br />
<br />
We now have just 5 days to get the bedroom ready to be finished with carpet this Thursday! This weekend we have been working hard on the list to get things either done/<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Paint the surround around the wardrobe </b></li>
<li><b>Add handles</b></li>
</ul>
<div>
All the handles are now added to the drawers and doors and look amazing, and with the handles added we can actually add our clothes to the wardrobes and finally start clearing the box room and living room which has been stacked to the ceiling with the entire contents of our bedrooms. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/"></a><span id="goog_1253190866"></span><span id="goog_1253190867"></span><br /></div>
<ul>
<li><b>Re-fit one wardrobe door</b></li>
</ul>
<div>
The wardrobe door to the far left was sitting a little proud and needed adjusting so that it was able to close properly. This is now done and so the wardrobes are complete and ready to be filled. </div>
<ul>
<li><b>Paint the ceiling </b>- There are a few pit holes and bumps in the ceiling that need filling and preparing before this is painted and this is the plan for this evening to get the ceiling painted before the carpet goes in. </li>
<li><b>paint the walls - </b>Where we had<a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/picking-wrong-colour-paint.html"> painted sample colours on the wall </a> we were struggling to cover these with the new wall colour that we had chosen and even though we painted the test patches in white first these were still grinning through the paint. Both walls have now had second coats of paint and the walls are now well covered and complete.</li>
<li><b>Complete the electrics, adding wall lights, sockets, and light switches </b>- Our electrician is booked to come around Tuesday night to tick this job off the list.</li>
<li><b>add skirting around the room - </b>Now the walls are painted the skirting can be added and painted, we just need to squeeze this job in and get painted before Thursday.</li>
<li><b>fit the radiator back on the wall - </b>This is a quick job and can be completed now that the walls are painted. </li>
<li><b>paint the dressing table and fit - </b>We originally had plans to wallpaper the dresser with the same paper that lines the inside of the wardrobes but as this area will be used it needs to be a bit stronger and have a protective coating so we need to research whether we can use glass or a vinyl wrap to seal the paper on the unit.</li>
</ul>
<div>
There's a fair amount of work to do before Thursday which means we both need to work hard each evening to get this all done but hopefully by the weekend we will be able to finally sleep in our wonderful new bedroom. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Considering we have been in the house nearly 2 years it's been a long time coming having a bedroom fit for our needs and moving from one room to the next and back in between taking out walls and gutting rooms has been incredibly hard. I can't wait to see everything come together. Gutting the room has been a strain on us both as we've had clothes in the living room, chest of drawers on the landing and endless deliveries of doors, hinges and materials stock piled in the living room. Getting the room complete not only gives us the bedroom we dreamed of but once complete it gives us back a lot of space that's currently getting very very annoying. </div>

<b>Kitchen Remodeling Ideas</b><br />
Your kitchen is the hub of your home. It’s where your family comes together to talk about their day, eat delicious meals, and relax with a nice cup of coffee. But sometimes you can get bored with the same design of the area over time, and think about what you can do to brighten up the space, or give it a warmer feeling. Taking on a kitchen makeover is not for the faint of heart, and you should be prepared to exercise a great deal of patience while renovations are under way.<br />
According to <a href="http://www.kitchens.com/design/budget-planning/surviving-a-remodel/surviving-a-remodel" rel="nofollow">kitchens.com</a>, “Think of a kitchen remodel the same way you would think about partaking in a weight loss program: no matter what anyone tells you, it's not happening overnight. Your patience will be tested; you'll consider cutting corners that aren't worth cutting.”<br />
<br />
<b>Investing in your Home</b><br />
An updated kitchen is one of the best investments that you can make in your home, and many times it adds more than just the cost of the project to your home’s value. In fact, a <a href="http://www.remodelingline.com/services/" rel="nofollow">kitchen remodel</a> for homes everywhere will increase the value of your home. It’s a lot of work, but if you can hang in there, the results are well worth it.<br />
<br />
<b>Budget</b><br />
If you are like me, you have great plans for how you would like your kitchen to look and function, but not necessarily the funds to make your dreams come true. But don’t worry; there are still plenty of things you can do to spruce up the place on a budget. For instance; start with a simple paint job.<br />
“To paint cabinets, first prime them with a de-glossing primer to help the paint adhere and eliminate the need for messy sanding,” says <a href="http://www.bhg.com/kitchen/remodeling/budget/budget-friendly-kitchen-ideas" rel="nofollow">bhg.com</a>. “Painting cabinets is time-consuming -- you need to remove doors, drawers, and hardware to do a thorough job -- but the results give you a fresh look for minimal cost.”<br />
When looking at how much you can afford to spend on renovations, consider what kinds of improvements are most important to you. If what you crave is new appliances, scour the internet in search of the best deal. New cabinets can be relatively cheap depending on what kind of material and style you want to go with. A fresh coat of paint can many times change the entire feel of a room, and paint is not very expensive at all.<br />
<br />
At a Little Cornish Home we managed to completely <a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/how-to-build-bespoke-kitchen-on-small.html">overhaul the kitchen</a> but kept to a tight budget with second hand units and painted walls. We shopped around and got many quotes for the new doors and shopped on e-bay for the handles by shopping in a variety of different stores we managed to get the best prices and even a free dishwasher from a house clearance meaning the kitchen looks amazing but didn’t cost us a fortune.<br />
<div>

We are now speeding through the renovation of our master bedroom, the wardrobe has now been completely lined needing just under four rolls of wallpaper to allow the pattern to line up. Considering this is going to be on the inside and only seen as a treat when getting clothes out it was an expensive and time consuming addition to the bedroom but something that we both really wanted and it is those personal touches that make our house our own. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10660374_10152669556864666_6397231817250971230_n.jpg?oh=5dcf5fc701ec63f904423634f12f122a&oe=546CED7B&__gda__=1415964013_245148c5f81b7cfa40b239374e539558" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Wallpapered wardrobes" border="0" height="180" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10660374_10152669556864666_6397231817250971230_n.jpg?oh=5dcf5fc701ec63f904423634f12f122a&oe=546CED7B&__gda__=1415964013_245148c5f81b7cfa40b239374e539558" title="Wallpapered wardrobes" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The ten drawers in the middle of the wardrobe and been made and fitted as well as the first two cupboard doors going into place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At the end of the weekend we had added all the doors and two of the handles to the wardrobes and can get an idea of how the room will look once completed. There are a few minor adjustments to make the far left hand door doesn't quite shut as neatly as we would like and is a few millimetres off being perfect so that will need amending. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We also painted the surround of the wardrobe in an antique white colour that we would hope to complement the doors but both feel that this clashes and is too bright next to the doors and we have decided to paint the surround in the same colours that the walls are painted in. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/10457784_10152677280679666_893867680457463570_n.jpg?oh=c5c0522016716326bbf9cb44fae17a20&oe=54645D28&__gda__=1416842775_431d0cf5cbfeb276ab067cacccdb7cf1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Custom built wardrobe" border="0" height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/10457784_10152677280679666_893867680457463570_n.jpg?oh=c5c0522016716326bbf9cb44fae17a20&oe=54645D28&__gda__=1416842775_431d0cf5cbfeb276ab067cacccdb7cf1" title="Custom built wardrobe" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Jobs to do on the bedroom. </div>
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: left;">Paint the surround around the wardrobe </li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Add handles</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Re-fit one wardrobe door</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Paint the ceiling</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">paint the walls</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Complete the electrics, adding wall lights, sockets, and light switches</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">add skirting around the room</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">fit the radiator back on the wall</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">paint the dressing table and fit</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once all these jobs are done we can book in the carpet fitters and finally move into the bedroom and I can not wait.</div>

With the bank holiday weekend proving to be a wash out the hard work spent doing DIY didn't seem to bad. I think if the sun was shining outside then it would have been a different story. With our <a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/picking-wrong-colour-paint.html">samples painted </a>and our final colour choice chosen it was now time to crack on with getting the walls coated. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/10593157_10152652175774666_1977235547469404697_n.jpg?oh=b2b622d0c668fa15b7003c4e70f14c9d&oe=546B3DC8" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Paint test pots" border="0" height="320" src="https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/10593157_10152652175774666_1977235547469404697_n.jpg?oh=b2b622d0c668fa15b7003c4e70f14c9d&oe=546B3DC8" title="Paint test pots" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The ceiling still needs a little attention and a few holes filled before this can be painted and as you can see on the below image to the left our light switch is currently sitting on this wall as we are waiting for the electrician to safely move this to another wall. Once this is done and the hole filled the walls and ceiling can have their final coats of paint. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/t1.0-9/10580050_10152652909159666_4196256277359834918_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Painted bedroom walls" border="0" height="180" src="https://scontent-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/t1.0-9/10580050_10152652909159666_4196256277359834918_n.jpg" title="Painted bedroom walls" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Whilst the walls are now in a state of limbo our attention moves back onto working on the wardrobes and my grand idea of wallpapering the insides. Although when the doors are fitted on the wardrobes and they are filled with clothes you will barely see the print but I was addement that this was something that I really wanted. We aren't having a feature wall in this bedroom or a feature colour scheme as want to keep the colours in neutrals and browns so having a little pop of colour when you open the wardrobe seemed like a great idea. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My partner doing the wallpapering and matching up the prints in the small sections might disagree that this is a good idea but as the sections start to come to life we both absolutely love it and can't wait to get them finished and get the clothes in and the doors on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t1.0-9/1902719_10152652909479666_7680530314598649965_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Wallpapered wardrobes" border="0" height="180" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t1.0-9/1902719_10152652909479666_7680530314598649965_n.jpg" title="Wallpapered wardrobes" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With another section complete the rails can now go back into the wardrobe and another job is ticked off the list of the grand home renovation project. </div>

After several hours at the weekend spent in Homebase and much deliberating, we had finally agreed on the colour of paint for a master bedroom. With the house renovations into their second year and only having temporary bedroom space up until now getting our master bedroom perfect is an exciting challenge and choosing the paint colour is very important. With colour guide books with the paint's in use and rows of tins in front of us we narrow down the choices and there was a clear winner for our paint. We chose to use Homebase Home Of Colour in a shade called 'Cosy Mocha' The colour in the guide book looked a nice neutral grey. The colour on the tin was a nice neutral grey, the colour on the website was also a nice neutral grey. </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Image from http://www.homebase.co.uk/</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But after painting just one wall this pink tinged wall was staring back at me and i hated it. Calling in my other half to get his opinion he immediately hated it too and the decision to repaint it was easily decided. The problem is we have gloss cream wardrobe doors on order and a pink/grey wall is not the neutral natural colour we chose to go with them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I understand that different paints can look different colours in different shades of light so we tried looking at the wall with the light off in just natural light. We even changed the light bulb to a white light rather than a warm light but there was no getting away from the fact that this colour had to many tones of pink in the paint that we just didn't want.<br />
<br />
Rather than agreeing on another colour in the shop we decided we would actually buy some test pots this time to sample the colours in the room to avoid making the same mistake again. Although we maybe should have done this in the first place we had managed to get the paint colours correct first time on the whole of the downstairs of the house and thought the luck might continue upstairs.<br />
<br />
Now that we had seen how awful this colour was we even started to think out of the box slightly more and get some samples of colours that we hadn't even contemplated before and even opted for a green! The green looked lovely on the tin and were really tempted to just go for it and buy it there and then, but once bitten, twice as shy. We were glad we got the sample on the wall as it dried a lot darker than the sample on the tin suggested and very swiftly decided against it.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
With samples all coming up differently to what was on the tins we ended up choosing the colour 'Barely Haze' which was actually our wildcard choice, this was the colour neither of us really liked in the shop but thought we would take a punt on and as an outside choice that we both knew wouldn't work. As the colours were coming up so differently to what was on the tins 'Barely Haze' turned out to be the neutral colour that we were looking for.<br />
<br />
The colour looked like it would work well with the sample from the gloss doors as well as the wallpaper choice for the insides of the wardrobes. so the following day it was back to Homebase to take the pink paint back and exchange for our new colour choice before screaming back and cracking on with the painting to finally make the most of the long weekend working on the house.<br />

With the plasterer paying us a visit last week the three exposed walls in the bedroom were now<a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/grand-designs-continue-on-our-bedroom.html"> freshly plastered</a> and drying beautifully and so we were able to give the room it's first lick of paint and finally start to see what the bedroom will look like moving forwards. Below is a shot of the built in wardrobe made from <a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/building-bedroom-for-christmas.html">moving the wall back into the bedroom behind it</a>. All the exposed panels have been given an undercoat, the backs and sides to the wardrobe will have wallpapered backs and sides to give a little bit of our personality to the custom built wardrobe. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Although the old wardrobe is still in the middle of the room with clothes in it until they can be moved into their new home we are managing to work around it and get the first coat of painting done in the room. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/t1.0-9/10345763_10152636723714666_4600415560587058230_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Decorating the bedroom" border="0" height="180" src="https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/t1.0-9/10345763_10152636723714666_4600415560587058230_n.jpg" title="Decorating the bedroom" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now just to let the paint dry and we'll be onto the next coat and will start to see the bedroom taking it's final shape. After nearly two years since we bought the dilapidated property we can not wait to have a beautiful bedroom to sleep in. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'll keep you posted on the progress over the bank holiday weekend but hoping that if the paint ever arrives from Homebase we will be able to crack on. Yes we made the mistake of ordering paint from Homebase which was supposedly delivered on the 12th of August but no sign of it yet! You live and learn eh!</div>

The savings and the loans that we took out 18 months ago have since run out and the only way to continue with the build is to do a little bit each month. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
With the weather in Cornwall being amazing we have spent some time at the beach and in the sea and efforts haven't been 100% on the house but we've the two year anniversary approaching of being first time home owners we are putting the pressure on to have a finished bedroom for our 2 year houseaversary. </div>
<div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here you can see that the walls are being lined with new plasterboard, the old walls were very wonky and old and after a few wall repairs the old plasterboard was ripped away and the new installed. To see how the bedroom looked before the new walls went in you can see the pictures <a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/renovating-master-bedroom.html">here</a>.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The room was then fully plaster boarded, except the ceiling as this was in good condition so will just need repainting saving us a bit of cash. You can see behind the wardrobe in the above image that we have also built a full width in built wardrobe. This new wardrobe will replace all the wardrobes and chests of draws in the bedroom creating more space around the bed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/v/t1.0-9/7077_10152627618244666_3309519322199422655_n.jpg?oh=821d9c46d73da9c9ef7497aaf98255c6&oe=546A96DA&__gda__=1416019751_f0804cb321bc7328b76eeb5c65113606" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="plastered bedroom" border="0" height="180" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/v/t1.0-9/7077_10152627618244666_3309519322199422655_n.jpg?oh=821d9c46d73da9c9ef7497aaf98255c6&oe=546A96DA&__gda__=1416019751_f0804cb321bc7328b76eeb5c65113606" title="plastered bedroom" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/t1.0-9/10407006_10152627618299666_3262800656102337987_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="plastered bedroom" border="0" height="180" src="https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/t1.0-9/10407006_10152627618299666_3262800656102337987_n.jpg" title="plastered bedroom" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then just two days ago we have had a visit from our plasterer who has plastered the remaining three walls in the bedroom and this has transformed the place. The next job is to get the paint brushes and rollers out and start working hard on decorating the bedroom. The new electrics for the wall lights and sockets are in place, the radiator position has been moved and we are ready for the final push. With bank holiday weekend approaching we have a plan for one person to work on painting the in built wardrobe and the other person to work on painting the walls and after that it will hopefully be a simply case of adding wardrobe doors, handles and getting our clothes into the bedroom. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As we currently have our clothes spread between the other two bedrooms and the old bedroom furniture storing our clothes in the living room getting this room complete will be a massive step forward and hopefully after living here nearly two years we will finally have a lovely bedroom to sleep in. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But before we move in.... we will be getting carpet fitted :@) Although we will have to wait until we have done all the decorating and wait for another packet of wages but the thought of having carpet for the first time in two years is very exciting indeed and will certainly make me paint a lot faster! </div>

After Christmas hitting us hard financially and the Christmas holiday feeling of not doing any work the months drifted by and before we knew it summer was approaching us and the whole of the upstairs still needs attention.<br />
<br />
With pay day upon us we blow all our cash by the 1st day of the month on plaster board and timber ready to start the process of renovating the master bedroom. First on the list of things to do was expose the two walls that need attention and these just happened to be the walls with the fitted wardrobes against. Clearing out the bedroom and then moving the wardrobes we now have access to the walls to strip off the old plaster board and re line with thermally insulated plaster board on the two external walls. The old plaster boarded walls were perfectly fine and we could have simply redecorated the room but we are doing everything we can to be environmentally friendly and retain as much heat as possible plus the benefits of saving money on heating.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/t1.0-9/10325171_10152450968359666_2604237834272366326_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Removing wardrobes" border="0" height="180" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/t1.0-9/10325171_10152450968359666_2604237834272366326_n.jpg" title="Removing wardrobes" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With the wardrobes emptied and moved to the other side we now have access to the walls that need insulating.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/t1.0-9/10338707_10152450968004666_6125077325914997992_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Renovating the bedroom" border="0" height="180" src="https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/t1.0-9/10338707_10152450968004666_6125077325914997992_n.jpg" title="Renovating the bedroom" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First we get to work ripping down the old plaster board and the old timbers that were holding them up. When I say holding them up, they were barely holding onto the crumbly wall and were not attached to the plaster board on the ceiling.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/t1.0-9/10437424_10152455965949666_6248401528317050159_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Removing old plaster board" border="0" height="180" src="https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/t1.0-9/10437424_10152455965949666_6248401528317050159_n.jpg" title="Removing old plaster board" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With all the old plaster board and old timbers removed we make a few repairs to the wall and check for any cracks and apart from looking a little old and moth eaten we are pleased that it is perfect to plaster board straight back over.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xaf1/t1.0-9/10372147_10152455965239666_4933527180545789541_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Bedroom renovation" border="0" height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xaf1/t1.0-9/10372147_10152455965239666_4933527180545789541_n.jpg" title="Bedroom renovation" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Separated at 400mm apart the timber's were secured in place, with the correct depth screws to hold the timbers firmly in place this time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/t1.0-9/10347428_10152455964794666_5306413941720354964_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Timbers for plaster boarding" border="0" height="180" src="https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/t1.0-9/10347428_10152455964794666_5306413941720354964_n.jpg" title="Timbers for plaster boarding" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With all the timbers in place it would have been time to fit the plaster board and our room would be ready for the plasterers... However like most aspects of renovating our house we decide to change the plans again. All along we decided to place the bed against the right hand side, we've had the whole <a href="http://alittlecornishhome.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/re-wiring-old-house.html">house rewired</a> and this included running sockets and electrics for wall lights on the right. However now the room was gutted we could see the room in a different way and decided to move the bed to the left hand side so now we need to get our electrician back to change things around once more!<br /><a href="https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/t1.0-9/10365771_10152455965074666_3297671921900280832_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Bedroom decorating" border="0" height="180" src="https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/t1.0-9/10365771_10152455965074666_3297671921900280832_n.jpg" title="Bedroom decorating" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's a minor set back but both agreed the bed would be better on the left and whilst we are renovating the whole house want to do our bedroom exactly how we want it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next job is to get the wiring done and then get the plaster board up ready for the plasterer, then all we need to do is decide how we want to decorate our new master bedroom.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

Whilst the boys were ripping down walls the girls were busy moving boxes from our old house into the new one. When I say new, I guess I should really say old house/building site. It was a shock to the system moving from a new build home to something built nearly 90 years ago with prehistoric electrics and no heating. I was suddenly wondering what we had let ourselves in for but luckily my other half and his dad were working at the speed of light and it wasn't long before I was seeing progress on our little house and the worry began to subside.<br />
<br />
However 18 months on and with the downstairs near completion the upstairs has come to a halt! Taking some time off for Christmas has really taken it's toll on us and the house, through the cold gloomy months of January and February we really struggled to get motivated to build any more of the house. However after a weeks holiday in the snow and an amazing time snowboarding we are now back and ready to start work on the house once again.<br />
<br />
We have bits to finish off in the bathroom, all the bedrooms to plaster and decorate, carpets to eventually fit once all the other jobs are done and the loft to insulate not to mention the whole entire outside of the house needs landscaping. We have a lot of work still to do and have not worked very hard over the last few months so with the weather getting slightly warmer I think it's time to come out of hibernation and get lots more completed on our first ever little Cornish Home.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03571190301618600891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2651742906893621380.post-88548283784784750782014-03-21T08:54:00.006+00:002014-08-13T12:57:43.917+01:00Decorating homes in Cornwall<div class="MsoNormal">

are some great local businesses that have a gorgeous selection of designer
brands. A favourite of ours is <u>Just Fab Design </u>in
Launceston, right on the Cornwall, Devon border. They are actually the largest
showroom of designer fabrics and wallpapers in the South West and they are like
a treasure trove. So many options, so little space! </div>

The
beauty of Just Fab Design is that they take as little or as much of the burden
off your shoulders. Maybe you just need a little help choosing fabrics for
upholstery, or paint colours to match your curtains. They offer expert advice,
or if you’re a little lost they can suggest colour schemes, measure up
your windows and furniture and arrange for your curtains, blinds and upholstery
to be made up and fitted in your home to your specification! Sounds great to
me. </div>

Some
of the more opulent fabrics available are swoon-worthy, the toiles are
tempting, and anything by <u>Manual Canovas</u> would suit very nicely. </div>

Just before Christmas we spent our time removing the bedroom walls and restructuring the upstairs to how we wanted it.<br />
<br />
Now it's time to think about getting these rooms plastered and then decorated. I actually feel a little bit sad that these are the last rooms that need decorating as I've enjoyed putting my personal stamp on the rest of the house. The second bedroom, the spare room from a very early stage already had it's colour theme chosen. One of the first things I bought before any of the work began down stairs was some gorgeous duck egg blue wallpaper with matching fluffy duck egg blue cushions and that was the theme for these room.<br />
<br />
However our master bedroom has no theme, no plan and quite frankly I have no idea what to do in our room. We have already used feature wallpaper downstairs in the living room and will be using feature wallpaper in the second bedroom so are reluctant to do this same technique in the master bedroom. Then I had the idea of stencils or decals on the wall. Painting a feature wall in one colour then adding a unique decal that is personal to both me and James. I've found these websites <a href="http://www.walldecalspop.com/">http://www.walldecalspop.com/</a> and <a href="http://www.wallstickers4fun.co.uk/" tabindex="-1" target="_parent">http://www.wallstickers4fun.co.uk</a> with some great designs and I'm now full of ideas.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.walldecalspop.com/lettering-and-quotes/believe-in-yourself-wall-quote-decal.html"><img border="0" src="http://www.walldecalspop.com/image/cache/data/zooyoo/8037%20(3)-620x620.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love this decal, it's perfect for us and what we've achieved with buying our first house and completely renovating it. I'm still liking the idea of having a feature wall in our bedroom so maybe a bold colour behind the bed with a statement like this above the bed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What do you think?</div>

We have missed festive drinks with friends and avoided Christmas shopping all together to get the house ready.<br />
<br />
Once the family arrived tools were officially put down and they have stayed down until today. We enjoyed a nice two week break from Christmas into the new year and going back to full time work was definitely a shock to the system. Now we are nearly three weeks into the new year and officially rested and relaxed it's time to start work and hopefully get the house finally finished.<br />
<br />
Today the boys are working in the porch, an area that has been completely ignored up until now, whilst the majority of the work was creating a comfortable living and kitchen area the door to the porch has been shut and forgotten about until today.<br />
<br />
With a stack of slates delivered we are working out patterns on how to lay the floor in the porch. Pictures will most definitely follow when the new floor is laid.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03571190301618600891noreply@blogger.com0
